Satan &
His Court
In Hell, Satan appointed
his own unholy aristocracy to help him rule over his kingdom. These
demons, in an inversion of the nine-fold order of the angels, were
sometimes divided into nine infernal orders of their own. First among
them, it is generally agreed, was one of Satan's oldest friends from his
days in Heaven, a powerful angel named Beelzebub.
| Beelzebub |
When Satan first
rebelled against Heaven he recruited several very powerful angels,
Beelzebub among them, to fight at his side. Once he took up his
new residence in Hell, Beelzebub learned to tempt men with pride. |
| Leviathan |
Secretary of the
Navy. Another great angel that plummeted from Heaven in
Lucifer's company was Leviathan, identified in Isaiah 27:1 as
"that crooked serpent... the dragon that is in the sea."
By some accounts Leviathan is blamed with being the serpent that
seduced Eve in the Garden of Eden. |
| Asmodeus |
Overseer
of the gambling houses in the court of Hell and the general
spreader of dissipation. In addition Asmodeus is the demon of
lust, personally responsible for stirring up marital
discord. |
| Astaroth |
Grand Duke of the
western regions of Hell, he was also Treasurer of the whole place.
The original couch potato, he encouraged men to sloth and
idleness. In his spare time, he served as a kind of guidance
counselor for the other fallen angels. |
| Behemoth |
Presidio over the
feasts in Hell and infernal watchman. |
| Belial |
One of Satan's most
venerable demons. According to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Belial was
the original leader of the forces of evil until the New Testament
firmly established Satan as the leader of the dark side. Belial
was also known as the unofficial demon of lies. |
Public
Office
| Lucifuge
Rofocale |
Prime
Minister of Hell. Lucifuge could only assume a body at night and he
hated the light. Among his many duties were the infliction of disease
and deformity, the creation of earthquakes, and the destruction of
sacred deities. His powers extended over all the treasures of the
earth. |
| Forcas |
Grand
President of Hell. A robust, white haired old man who taught logic and
rhetoric, and commanded the 290 legions of the infernal forces. |
| Leonard |
First Order
Demon, Inspector General of black magic and sorcery; master of the
sabbats. When he presided over a sabbat, he appeared as an enormous
black goat with three horns and the head of a fox. |
| Abbadon |
The
Destroyer. In the book of Revelation he is identified as the chief of
the demon locusts. His other appellation was Sovereign of the
Bottomless Pit. |
| Adramelech |
Grand
Chancellor and supervisor of Satan's wardrobe. |
| Baalberith |
Chief
Secretary of Hell, head of its public archives, and the demon who
tempted men to blasphemy and murder. When seated among the princes of
Hell, he was usually seen as a pontiff. |
| Alastor |

Decrees handed down by Satan's Court. |
| Melchom |
The prince's
Treasurer. |
| Uphir |
Hell's
Physician, responsible for the good health of all the demons living
there. |
| Verdelet |
A cross
between a maitre d' and a transportation coordinator. He was master of
ceremonies in Hell, and also was responsible to ensure the witches
from Earth got to the sabbats safely and on time. |
| Nysrock |
A second
order demon, chef to the princes in the houses of Hell. |
| Dagon |
The prince's
official baker. |
| Paymon |
In charge of
public ceremonies in Hell, and used his own will to overrule the will
of humans. |
| Nybras |
An inferior
demon, but in charge of the pleasures in Hell. |
| Xaphan |
A second
order demon who kept the fires of Hell stoked and blazing. At
the time of the angels' rebellion, it was Xaphan's suggestion to set
Heaven on fire. |
The
Army of the Night
Satan took great pleasure
in his private army. He liked armies and what they were good for --
wars. When it came to death and destruction, what could be better
than a bloody revolution or an international conflict? For demons, a
battlefield was like an amusement park. The primary players in
Satan's army were:
| Put
Satanachia |
Commander-in-Chief, with
a profound knowledge of all the planets and provided witches with the
animal familiars. He also had a peculiar power over mothers. |
| Agaliarept |
Grand General and
commander of the second legion. He held sway over Europe and Asia
Minor and controlled the past and future. Possessed of the power to
discover all secrets, he was particularly good at stirring up animosity
and distrust among men. |
| Fleuety |
Beelzebub's lieutenant
general and an expert in the use of poisonous plants and hallucinatory
herbs. |
| Amon |
Marquis of Hell, handled
the marching orders of 40 legions of the infernal army. A demon who
vomited flame, he had the head of a wolf and the tail of a serpent,
and the gift of prophecy and could see the future. |
| Aguares |
Grand Duke of the eastern
regions of Hell, had 30 legions under his command. A master linguist,
he was known to incite dancing among mortals. |
| Amduscias |
Grand Duke who commanded
29 legions and was known for making disturbing music. |
| Sargatanas |
Brigadier Major directly
under Astaroth's command. He could steal into a human's mind and
share in his innermost thoughts. |
| Nebiros |
Field Marshall on
Astaroth's staff who personally oversaw North America and often
employed animals to perform his nefarious acts. |
| Raum |
A Count and Commander of
30 legions. He was an accomplished destroyer of cities and had the
uncanny ability to determine who the culprit was in any theft. |
| Baal |
Grand Duke and Commander
of 66 legions. |
| Abigor |
In command of 60 legions,
he was skilled in the secrets of war and prophecy. Also, unlike most
demons, Abigor was usually portrayed as handsome and rather dashing. |
| Azazel |
Chief Standard Bearer of
the infernal armies. |
